You don't have to like it, but it's the one and only creative, original skin in this contest. It just doesn't work. It doesn't fit on your desktop, it's made for those command line freaks. Because, you know, VLC/skin2 doesn't support alpha-blending and doesn't drop these shadows. VLC ftw!!! But as long as it looks and feels just plain ugly, VLC will never be your default media player. If you've got that one single file you can't run with your default or second or third media player, you go and get VLC for that single file. And if you found it in VLC's preferences hell, you wonder why that f*** skin doesn't show up, because nobody f*** tells you to f*** restart your media player.

Users love interfaces.Īlso VLC doesn't rule, because since 2004 (3-2-1-0?) you won't find that f*** preference to apply a skin. But its interface is ugly on all platforms, and there's no way to skin it like other media players. It's "free", open source, it plays and streams everything, it's just great. VLC is a great media player and much more. I'm not trying to be offensive, but those are the most unprofessional skins I've ever seen. Those skins look awful, they look like they were made by a feckin' five year. Maybe it has something to do with the smoother edges, since I notice a number of skins don't seem to employ anti-aliasing? The other reason is I spent too much time try to work out which skin worked for me in the past with Winamp.īTW if you want to put your own skin together, you could look at the ones for Winamp for inspiration, but be sure to ask the original author permission if you wish to adapt it to VLC: Its hard to say what makes it work better, but it does. I stick to the non-skin UI because it feels more polished. We are always looking for people interested in implementing new UI ideas, since even if the current UI works well there are always 'improved' ways of going about things. On the non-skin side there are people who are looking into some slick UI alternatives, but this is even more work and don't expect anything soon on this front. If you think you can make a better skin then make one, or if you going to criticize at least make it constructive. Developing a good skin is hard work, since you need to have both the imagination and the understanding of user interaction. As often repeated these are skins, and are therefore customisable.
